Malaria due to Plasmodium vivax had been known as an indigenous protozoan disease in Korea. However, massive application of insecticides and improvement of sanitation for several decades have led to rapid reduction of malaria incidence, then it
was
recognized to have been almost eradicated in recent years. However, in 1993, one case of suspected indigenous Vivax malaria was reported in Moonsan, Kyungki-do and consecutively, more than 20 cases of suspected indigenous Vivax malaria occurred
in
northern counties of Kyungki-do and Kangwon-do in 1994. We encountered one case of Vivax malaria in a 24 year old Korean male living in Seoul, who had no history of transfusion, drug abuse, overseas travel and recent travel to Kyungki-do. He had
characteristic fever, chill, generalized malaise, hepatosplenomegaly and confirmed with peripheral blood smear finding. He was successfully treated with hydroxychloroquine and primaquine.
